Ice or heat? A simple guide

When to reach for an ice pack, when heat helps more, and why movement matters most.

A gel ice pack and a heat wrap on a folded towel

It’s one of the questions we hear most. The honest answer: both can help you feel more comfortable, and neither one heals an injury by itself.

Ice may help when

✓ An injury is new (the first couple of days) and swollen

✓ An area feels hot or irritated after activity

✓ You want short-term pain relief: 10–15 minutes with a cloth between the ice and your skin

Heat may help when

✓ Muscles feel stiff or tight, like a stiff low back in the morning

✓ You want to loosen up before gentle exercise

✓ Pain is ongoing rather than from a fresh injury

The part that matters most

Gentle movement within comfort usually does more for recovery than either one. If pain isn’t improving after a week or two, book an evaluation. This guide is general information, not medical advice.
